What is a Smash Burger?
A smash burger is more or less one of the most common griddle recipes that people make when they first get a new Blackstone or other flat-top grill.
They are very likely to be enchanted by these perfectly crusty yet still yummy and greasy burgers soon afterward.
A smash burger is definitely what it sounds like; it is a ground beef burger that is smashed thin on a hot griddle to cook.
Normally, the smashing has to do with a ball of 80/20 ground beef that is pressed down into an evenly thin patty using a spatula or a burger press.
The burger crust is the magic of this burger, and it might appear burnt to some, but it is actually the result of a Maillard reaction when done right.
It is just that browning that you get when you cook certain meats, and it is extremely mouth-watering; this is the non-science interpretation.
Servings Suggestions
Ensure that you add cheese to the top of the burger during the last minute of cooking to create a cheeseburger.
You can opt for American cheese if you want a true smash burger that you would get at a diner.
You can also add seasoning to the beef at the same time you add the salt and pepper, as this will give it some extra flavor.
In the case of toppings, you can go classic with toppings such as tomatoes, pickles, lettuce, onions, mayo, and ketchup.
In addition, you can get creative with toppings like fried onions, blue cheese, or barbecue sauce.
Storing Leftovers
You can actually store them in the fridge if you don’t eat all your burgers.
All you need to do is place them in an airtight bag or container, and they will be able to last for up to 3 days.
You can also reheat as you would prefer and enjoy.
As you know, the smash burgers you make at home are best served warm and fresh.
Recipe FAQs
What Is So Special About a Smash Burger?
The process involves an extremely thin patty that is pressed and cooked on a burning hot griddle, resulting in a crust on the burger.
The crust on the smash burger is packed with flavor and texture that differentiate it from a classic burger.
How Much Meat Do I Need?
You can use one pound of ground beef, even though I used 1.5 Ibs of ground beef for this recipe.
You can make four patties. But this is just based on how many you plan to serve; it is just based on your preference.
There’s also the option of making 1-2 cheeseburgers if you would like to.
Can I Use Ground Turkey Instead?
Well, of course, yes, if you would like to. Just go ahead and use ground turkey.
However, you need to make sure that you grease your Blackstone or cast iron well before, given that turkey is extremely lean and can stick if you don’t.
How Do You Know When a Burger Is Done?
For this recipe, the desired result is thin and crunchy patties.
So, I strongly suggest that you opt for a meat thermometer and ensure that it reads 160 or above for a well-done beef burger.
According to the USDA, it recommends that burgers read 160–165 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, some cook burgers under, but that is not recommended. How you cook your burgers is up to you.
Blackstone Smash Burgers
It is a fact that the Blackstone Smash Burger is one of the best and simplest burgers you will ever make.
It is quite much easier to feed a crowd with smash burgers on a Blackstone.
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs. of ground beef, 80/20
- ½ teaspoon of garlic salt
- 1 tomato (sliced)
- ½ red onion (peeled and sliced)
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- ½ teaspoon of pepper
- 4 pieces of leaf lettuce
- 1 tablespoon of butter (melted)
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese
Laid-Out Instructions
- First, divide the beef into 8 balls that are roughly 3 oz each, then proceed to place them in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them.
- After that, preheat the griddle over medium-high heat (roughly 400 degrees Fahrenheit).
- That being done, butter the buns and place them on the griddle for 2 minutes to toast them. After that, set them aside while you prepare the beef.
- Now, place the remaining butter on the griddle, move it around to melt it, and then you can place 4 of the beef balls on the griddle in the melted butter.
- After that is done, top each one with a piece of parchment paper and then press down to smash the beef into a thin patty with either a burger press or a large spatula; keep in mind that this has to be done firmly.
- Afterward, get rid of the parchment paper, then season the patties with garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Cook the patties for 2 minutes until the juices in the beef begin to rise to the top and the color begins to change, then proceed to scrape under the patty to get under the seared parts and turn over the patty.
- Immediately after you turn over, do not smash down the patties again. Proceed to cook for an extra minute, and place a piece of cheese on two of the patties (half of them) to melt.
- Now, top each of those patties with the other patties without cheese immediately after that cheese is melted.
- That being done, move those patties to a separate platter and continue this process until all the patties have been prepared.
- Now, it is time to arrange your burgers. Just place the sliced tomatoes, lettuce, and red onions on the bottom bun.
- Also, add the double patty on top and top with the top of the hamburger buns. After that, the smash burgers are ready to be served and enjoyed.
Final Thoughts
Keep in mind that you can still make a smash burger at home if you don’t have a Blackstone.
You can use a different brand of flat-top griddle, like a Char-Broil 4 Burner Gas Griddle or a seasoned cast iron skillet.
Just make sure that you preheat the skillet evenly before you use it.
To achieve the desired caramelization and crust on the patty, the flat top or skillet has to be extremely hot.
Our Blackstone was preheated on the high heat setting for these smash burgers.
You can also serve your delicious smash burgers with deep-fried onion rings, fried pickles, and grilled French fries.
This brings us to the end of this guide, as you now have the best Blackstone smash burger recipe.
